An experienced doctor will examine the lump to confirm it's a lipoma. In some cases, an ultrasound scan may be used for confirmation. The doctor will then discuss the removal procedure with you.
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic. The doctor makes a small incision and carefully removes the lipoma and its capsule. The incision is then closed with fine stitches to minimise scarring.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lipoma Removal
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning the area will be completely numb. You will not feel any pain during the removal, only the initial small injection to numb the skin.
Any surgical incision will leave a scar, but our doctors are highly skilled at using minimal incision techniques. The resulting scar is typically a very fine line that fades significantly over time and is often difficult to see once fully healed.
Downtime is minimal. Most patients can return to office work and light activities the next day. We advise avoiding strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for about 2-4 weeks to allow the area to heal properly. Your doctor will provide specific advice based on the size and location of the lipoma.
It is very rare for a lipoma to grow back in the same spot if it has been completely surgically removed along with its capsule. However, if you are prone to lipomas, it is possible for new, separate ones to develop in other areas.
Lipomas are almost always benign (non-cancerous). A cancerous fatty tumour, called a liposarcoma, is extremely rare. For complete safety and peace of mind, we recommend that all removed lipomas are sent for histology (lab analysis) to confirm their benign nature.
