Yellow, thickened, and brittle nails are hallmark signs of a fungal nail infection (onychomycosis). The fungus digests the keratin in the nail, causing it to change colour and texture. While it's the most common cause, a professional diagnosis is important to rule out other conditions.
While some home remedies like tea tree oil may have mild antifungal properties, they rarely penetrate the nail plate effectively enough to clear an established infection. Medical-grade treatments, either topical or oral, are significantly more effective and are required for a reliable cure.
Treatment requires patience. Because the goal is for a new, healthy nail to grow out, the process can take several months. Fingernails typically take around 6 months, while toenails can take 9-12 months or longer to fully grow out clear of infection.
